Chronic long-term Stress and its detrimental effects to your health are well documented. Current research shows that it can lead to serious conditions such as depression, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

New therapies are looking at how trauma, stress and health conditions can manifest themselves in physical symptoms. This area of study is known as Meta Health or Meta Medicine (MH). MH uses the metaphors of the body’s symptoms to help us find the root cause, in other words, why someone is not feeling balanced and healthy.

You may be familiar with Louise Hay’s classic, Heal Your Body. MH uses CT scans and medical research to pinpoint the area of the body to be targeted based on the perception of how one feels after a traumatic occurrence.

Have you ever had an event that was unexpected or shocking and you felt that you couldn’t do anything about the situation? These events play out in your mind over and over, creating a flood of stress hormones which send your body into “fight or flight” mode. In effect, the body reacts as though you are fighting or running away from an event. Even though the event may have happened years earlier, if you have not been able to release the emotions associated with it and move on, your brain thinks the event is happening right now. When you are in this state, the body’s immune system, vital for “rest and digest” and repair, is not doing its job. “Fight and flight” and the work of the immune system cannot operate at the same time. Unfortunately “fight and flight” will dominate.

I’d like to share a few interesting case studies:

Road rage

In my EFT workshop, a student ask to have treatment for his rage issues when driving in Hong Kong because every time he heard a car horn he would fly into a rage. Normally he said he was calm, but behind the wheel he became a different person. We used EFT tapping to help us access the subconscious quickly to find out more information.

One of the amazing things about EFT is that while we tap on the acupuncture points, we can easily go to past memories that could be causing the present day emotions. This man quickly recalled childhood memories of feeling anxious when he heard the sound of a car horn. He went right to the time at around age 8 when his tutor would come to the house and teach him piano. If he made a mistake, the tutor would hit his hands with a ruler. This was terrifying for the little boy. He had no way of getting out of this situation and he didn’t dare tell his parents, who were trying to do their best to make sure he had a good education.

The belief that the little boy created as a protection strategy was that when he heard a car horn, he believed he was about to be hurt. Over thirty years later, he still had the memory, but didn’t realise the connection with his current behaviour.

The next step was to use Matrix Reimprinting using EFT. By going back in time, we were able to apply EFT tapping on the acupuncture points of the younger self, the one that was traumatised. We allowed the younger self to speak up for himself and feel safe. This transformation was huge in allowing this man to heal. He came to realise that when he is behind the wheel of a car and hears a car horn, he is safe. He no longer floods his body with stress hormones.

This profound and permanent shift took less than an hour to bring about.

High blood pressure

My Pilates/ yoga teacher once told me that she was feeling frustrated and angry with her upstairs neighbour. The neighbour’s dog had long nails and the sound of the dog’s nails on the hardwood floors was so annoying that she wanted to break her lease and move. She said it was even affecting her blood pressure for which she had been taking medication for about ten years. I suggested she see me for an EFT session.

During the session I focused on her high blood pressure and, using Meta Health analysis, we were able to go back into a memory of when she had a corporate job and worked for a female boss who intimidated her. In fact she suffered trauma when this woman humiliated her and berated her in front of her work colleagues at a staff meeting. In this memory she was sitting at her workstation, acutely aware that her boss was approaching. Because her boss wore high heels, she could hear her heels clicking on the floor and this was a trigger to her mind and body that she needed to be alert for possible danger. What an ah-ha moment this realisation was for my client. The neighbour’s dog’s nails and her terrifying boss’s high heels were connected in her mind and body.

I used Matrix Reimprinting to take her back to the event ten years earlier, and gave her younger self some strategies to support and help her with the situation. Not only was she able to deal with the sound of the dog’s nails, even more impressive was the fact that she no longer had high blood pressure. The next day her BP was already dropping, and by day three it was completely normal – without the use of any medication. My client was especially shocked because she thought she had inherited high BP since both parents had been on medication for years.
This may come as a surprise to many people, but hereditary factors accounts for only 5% of illnesses.

Baby blues

While I was treating her newborn baby for colic in my clinic, the mother started to cry uncontrollably. Since the baby had colic and cried frequently the new mother was under a lot of stress because she felt helpless to soothe her infant.

Her sadness seemed to be related to another issue so I asked her to see me for an EFT session. During the session we were able to tap into that sadness which went back to a memory of around age nine. She recalled waking up one night and hearing someone in the kitchen crying and was surprised to see her father sitting in the dark weeping uncontrollably. She felt his sadness, but at the same time she felt helpless to do anything. About a year later, her father sadly took his own life.

As an adult, she now held the subconscious belief that when someone she loved was sad and crying, she would be unable to do anything and this might result in the person’s death.

Using EFT and MR, I helped her go back in time to her younger self and allow her younger self to talk to her father. She was able to say all the things she never had a chance to say to him, thus releasing unresolved emotions. She also ‘heard’ her father explain that it was not her fault, and since she was a young child, she was not responsible for his happiness. This allowed for an enormous healing and release of heartache. She was also able to recall all the good memories about her father rather than replaying the kitchen scene again and again. After one session, this new mom was able to be more relaxed and feel confident that she could soothe her baby.

The good news is that we now have evidence-based confirmation that EFT tapping works.

Here is an interesting article on how EFT can rewire the brain.

Have Good Sitting and Standing Posture https://thebodygroup.com/have-good-sitting-and-standing-posture/ Sun, 20 May 2018 11:27:06 +0000 https://thebodygroup.com/?p=7863 What is one thing you can do right now to look up to 10 years younger in a matter of seconds?

Look at the difference in these two pictures, taken seconds apart. Observe the way the tissue changes in the face and neck. In the first photo, you see a face ageing as gravity pulls down the soft tissue that has no support structure, resulting in jowls, while in the second photo the soft tissue is balanced on the facial bone structure, helping to redefine the loose jaw line.

Slouching when sitting also causes the abdominal organs to push forward, simply because when you slouch, your rib cage and pelvis are closer together and the intestines have to move out – in some cases onto our laps.

A hunched back and shoulders also cause us to look older because this kind of condition is often associated with elderly people who have heart or lung disease.

Sadly, we are now seeing younger and younger people coming to us with poor posture. Contributing factors include heavy school bags and sitting with the hips too low while doing homework on a laptop or other device. I recently saw a girl under the age of 8 who had both scoliosis and a rib hump due to her poor sitting posture while watching YouTube cartoons much of the day.

Poor posture causes many changes that occur from the inside, including :

    • Compression of the spinal cord (the largest bundle of nerves in the body)
    • Forward head posture, which decreases blood flow to the brain, contributing to brain fog
    • Headaches
    • Arthritic changes in the joints of the entire spine
    • Shearing of the vertebrae, so that one vertebra starts to slide forward of the one below it (spondylosis)
    • Compression of the roots of the nerves that run from the spinal cord to all areas of the body, resulting in loss of muscle strength, loss of sensation and impaired bodily functions
    • Compression of the blood vessels and nerves in front of the shoulders and in the armpit areas. This can create thoracic inlet and outlet dysfunction (i.e. arm and hand weakness, or symptoms such as burning, tingling, numbness and pins and needles).
    • Poor digestion and elimination
    • Back and neck pain and loss of motion

CranialSacral Therapy– Head and Face Shaping for Infants https://thebodygroup.com/head_and_face_shaping/ Thu, 20 Apr 2017 15:27:47 +0000 https://thebodygroup.com/?p=6678 Why should I have my baby’s head shaped?
A balanced, symmetrical head and face structure is not just about structural beauty.  It is also an important factor to consider in infants because lack of symmetry of the cranial bones can cause serious problems in terms of alignment of the head, spine and neck (and later the proper positioning of the teeth), pinched nerves, and proper drainage of the sinuses.  Needless to say, these problems, if left untreated, become progressively more serious as the child grows into adulthood.

How does misalignment of the cranial bones occur?
Forceps delivery may result in compression of the sphenoid bone, which can restrict normal rhythmic skull bone movement.  But even in a natural delivery, there can be facial misalignment.  One of the most common examples is a left facial slant, where the left eye is smaller and higher, the cheekbone on that side is depressed, and the corner of the mouth droops slightly.  Misalignment of the cranial bones can also occur after birth if there has been prolonged lying on the back, torticollis (a crick in the neck), or misalignment of the body.

How do I know if my baby needs this treatment?
In many cases, the lack of balance and symmetry will be easily apparent.  Very often the baby’s head will return to a normal shape within 72 hours after birth, but if your baby is not sucking well or taking as long as, say, 45 minutes to feed, there is a possibility that correction through gentle pressure is needed.  Bruising of the head, colic and non-projectile reflux are similarly indications that reshaping might be needed.  Even if these symptoms are not present, however, your baby can benefit from treatment.  Difficulties can arise from the baby’s position in utero, especially in cases of multiple babies in the womb, and the shape of the mother’s pelvis.

Does the treatment hurt?
The treatment is very gentle and newborn babies will often sleep through it.

How long does it take?
A session with Caroline is one hour (or 30 minutes with very active children).  Three to ten visits might be needed, depending on the severity of the case and the age of the child.  Treatment of infants under two months is best as the bones are not fused at this point.

TMJ mechanics and Dysfunction https://thebodygroup.com/tmj-mechanics-and-dysfunction/ Thu, 21 Apr 2016 15:39:36 +0000 https://thebodygroup.com/?p=3619 This condition is often overlooked. Do you suffer from

  • Pain in the front of the ears, especially on waking.
  • Persistent pain in the muscles of the face, on one or both sides.
  • A click or ‘popping’ sensation in the joint when opening the mouth.
  • Difficulty opening the mouth because it seems ‘stuck’,
  • An episode when the jaw was stuck open
  • Pain with chewing
  • Recurring headaches
  • Chronic neck and shoulder pain and stiffness
  • Ringing of the ears

If you answer yes to any of the questions above, you may have Temporal Mandibular Joint Syndrome/dysfunction.

Anatomy

The temporal-mandibular joint is a structure that connects the lower jaw to the paired temporal bone on the side of the head with the joint located in front of the ear. This joint is unusual in that there is one jaw bone with two joints on either side, so that one side can influence the other. The large temporal muscles, together with other muscles and ligaments, allow the joint to move properly while chewing and speaking. If any component is adversely affected due to muscle tension, arthritis, a head injury, or incorrect mastication or opening too wide, the movement of the joint becomes restricted, resulting in pain.

Description

Because of our need to speak and eat, humans have a jawbone with a wide range of movement. The joint that connects the lower jaw, or mandible, to the temporal bone of the skull is like a hinge with a small disc of cartilage that protects the contact surface between the two bones and allows for easy movement. TMJ syndrome is the term that indicates pain or some other disorder in this area.

Almost everyone experiences some discomfort in the temporal-mandibular joint at some time. Simply yawning widely or eating something in an incorrect way can result in pain or a clicking noise when the jaw is moved. This situation is usually temporary and often resolves itself spontaneously without treatment. In some cases, however, the patient feels pain radiating throughout the face, even reaching down to the neck and shoulders. This is a chronic case of TMJ that could be linked to other disorders.

Causes

In most cases, TMJ syndrome results from excessive effort in using the jaw muscles; dislocation of a disc in the joint, whiplash when the head is snapped back, fall injury to the face or chin, a degenerative joint disease; or sometimes a combination of these and other elements. The most common cause, however, is simply an excess of effort used in the repetitive motion of opening and closing the jaw or opening the mouth too wide, which has resulted in ‘wear and tear’. This effort may result from clenching the jaw or grinding the teeth, but it can also result from structural misalignment, such as a protruding jaw, misalignment of the teeth, or badly fitting dentures. Other factors can include chronic poor posture because when someone slouches for long periods of time, the head is moves forward resulting in the lower jaw hanging from the skull and not allowing the jaw to be in a normal resting position.

The dislocation of one or both discs in the articulation of the jaw can be caused by a sudden blow or trauma to the head or simply by chewing intensely or yawning too widely. Usually the displaced disc returns to its correct position without causing any permanent damage to the jaw but if the displacement happens frequently, the jaw may make a clicking sound with opening and closing indicating the disc is not in the correct position. Over time, the bony surfaces of the joints start to wear down because the disc is not protecting the two surfaces which results in a grinding sound called crepetus. These symptoms are similar to those of other degenerative joint diseases, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, where inflamed articulation gives rise to pain and stiffness.

Treatment

Taking painkillers reduces inflammation and relieves pain, but this does not solve the underlying cause of the problem. Patients with TMJ need to comprehensively assess their lifestyle, from everyday stresses that cause tension to eating foods that cause an excessive load on the jaw. In cases where the alignment of the dental arches is incorrect, a dentist knowledgable in treating TMJ syndrome should be consulted. Besides advising the individual to chew properly, an osteopath can also use manipulation techniques to increase the range of motion of the head, neck, shoulders and upper back.

Prevention

To prevent involuntary muscular effort or an unbalanced pressure on the jaw, do not sleep with the head turned to one side, or with the entire weight of the head on the chin, a position common in people who sleep prone. Try to sleep on your side, or on your back, without a pillow. Ideally a soft diet is recommended especially when you are having discomfort. If you feel tension in your jaw when waking up, clenching the jaw or grinding the teeth, something that can happen involuntarily while sleeping may cause it. Consult a dentist or an orthodontist regarding the use of a night guard that protects the bite and seek treatment for stress reduction such as meditation and EFT.

The resting positon of the jaw is slightly relaxed with the tip of the tongue on the roof of the mouth. Effort should be made to try to find this balance. Correct sitting posture is also essential because when the alignment is balanced all the joints in the body are relaxed, including the jaw joint.

What happens to the brain when you use EFT https://thebodygroup.com/what-happens-to-the-brain-when-you-use-eft/ Fri, 15 Apr 2016 08:22:02 +0000 https://thebodygroup.com/?p=3505 It used to be believed that it was not possible to change the brain, but in the past ten years scientists have proved that we absolutely do have the power to change our brain, even when it has been damaged, and thus change the way we perceive the world. This ability of the brain to change is referred to as neuroplasticity.

David Feinstein, PhD, a clinical psychologist who has served on the faculty of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Dr. Dawson Church, a leader in the field of epigenetics (which explores how our DNA is modified by outside stimuli), offer research to show that EFT Tapping is a valuable bridge between cutting edge Western medicine and ancient healing practices. Tapping on meridian points can enable an individual to make profound changes in the brain quickly and relatively easily without the need for medical intervention.

In a recorded interview (found on the website shown below), Dr. Feinstein explains that, in a study at Harvard Medical School, an MRI revealed that stimulation of the body’s meridian points by means of acupuncture significantly reduced activity in a part of the brain known as the amygdala. When you experience trauma or fear, the amygdala is triggered and your body is flooded with the stress hormone cortisol, causing disruption to your health and emotions. In a further study to test the reduction of cortisol by tapping conducted by Dr. Dawson Church, 83 subjects were divided into groups to either: tap on the meridian points, receive talk therapy, or undergo no treatment at all. Those who undertook the tapping solution exhibited a reduction in cortisol of 24 – 50%, while the other two groups showed no reduction at all in their cortisol levels.

Dr. Feinstein points out that with EFT, you deliberately recreate mentally the event or situation that caused trauma, therefore putting the amygdala in response mode to an extent in some way similar to the original situation. You then tap on the meridian points, and this has the effect of reducing the activity of the amygdala. This creates an opposing situation in the brain and eventually, if you continue to tap – sometimes for just a short time – the opposing situation will dominate and the ‘new normal’ becomes a state where the subject can recall the trauma but no longer feel any physiological reaction to it.

EFT, therefore, offers an easy tool to change the neural pathways quickly and effectively, allowing the subject to think himself or herself out of a situation. Once the charge has been removed from the thought, it is not necessary to revisit it and healing will then be reflected in the individual’s life, whether the trauma related to an illness, injury, finances or a relationship. Dr Feinstein feels that EFT can be even more effective than acupuncture because it is more flexible. One can do it oneself and adjust the reminder phrase as the healing takes place for even faster results.

In terms of the future of EFT, Dr. Feinstein feels that the medical fraternity will soon be more and more open to the role that meridian stimulation plays in healing. This will be reflected in society by schools and other organisations being open to teaching EFT to children, something that in time will benefit the whole of society.

An Overview of Baby Head Shape https://thebodygroup.com/an-overview-of-baby-head-shape/ Wed, 06 Apr 2016 07:26:07 +0000 https://thebodygroup.com/?p=3440 What are Plagiocephaly and Brachycephaly?

Plagiocephaly and Brachycephaly are medical terms given to the condition of flatness in the shape of the head.

Plagiocephaly is the name for flattening of the head in any of the four quadrants of the cranium (back, front, left, right).  It is this condition that often results in asymmetry of the head and face as the ear, forehead and cheekbone on the flattened side of the head are pushed forward.

In Brachycephaly either the front or the back of the head lacks projection.  This condition is not usually characterized by asymmetry of the ears and facial bones.

What causes a misshapen head?

The following may be causes of an improper development of the head shape among infants:

  • Prolonged lying on the back;
  • Torticollis;
  • Misalignment of the body;
  • Delivery at birth;

Misshapen heads have become markedly more common, since the introduction of the Back To Sleep Program designed to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).  There has been a 40% decrease in SIDS since mothers have been taught to put their babies down to sleep on their backs rather than their stomachs.  Unfortunately, however, prolonged lying on the back is one of the causes of children developing a misshapen head.

Torticollis is a condition in which spasms in the neck prevent the baby from turning his head equally in both directions.  It may cause a child to favor looking either to the left or to the right.  Torticollis should be corrected as soon as possible or the face and head of a child may not develop symmetrically.  It is advisable to seek the assistance of a trained practitioner as early as possible for early assessment and prompt treatment.

There are a variety of causes misalignment of the body in infants.  Common causes are relatively large babies born from a small maternal pelvis, or multiple infants (twins) leading to crowding in the womb.  In the case of twins, one twin may be more compressed than the other in the womb.  Sometimes a baby’s head may become stuck in its mother’s pelvis or under her ribs, restricting the infant’s movement.  In one case that I assessed it was possible to see where the maternal ribs had pressed into the top of the baby’s head. When a baby’s pelvis is misaligned, the position of the head and neck will also be affected.

Given the softness of an infant’s bones, difficult or assisted deliveries may alter the alignment of a baby’s head and facial bones, particularly when instruments such as ventouse or forceps are used.  Forceps can leave an impression on the bones of the head, and ventouse can cause elongation of the head. Sometimes misalignment will correct itself although this depends on the amount of force that had to be used in delivering the baby safely.

Misconceptions:

Mothers often assume that baby’s condition is somehow their fault, wrongly believing the way they hold their baby or wash his hair is responsible.  This is certainly not the case.

Neither is the condition hereditary.  In fact, it can actually result from a perfectly normal delivery.  For example, one eye can be smaller and higher on the face; this is actually a facial slant caused by the facial bones dragging along the mother’s tail bone.  Just how prominent the facial slant is depends on the size of the head, the size of the mother’s pelvis and the position of her tailbones.  Around 70% of facial slants occur on the left side, as most natural deliveries lead with this side.  Often the bone on the back of head will also rotate, causing a less rounded skull.

Prevention

Crying & Sucking

Crying and sucking both help to shape a baby’s head by contracting the connective tissue.  If using a bottle to feed baby, make him work harder by using a slow flow teat.

Check Your Baby’s Alignment

Get a professional to check out your baby’s alignment a few weeks after the birth when the body and head have had a chance to stretch out and reshape.  If this does not happen, have someone trained in working with infants check and treat any misalignment of the pelvis, spine or head.  If you had a c-section with no complications and the head shape was perfect when your baby was born, arrange to see a therapist trained in head shaping if it suddenly starts to become flat.

Tummy Time

All babies should have tummy time six times a day.  This should be for as long as they can tolerate it, even if it is only for 30 seconds.  This not only takes pressure off the back of the head, but also strengthens the neck muscles to help with reshaping the head.  Many of the neck muscles are attached to the sides of the face and skull.

Head Brace/Helmet

Head braces or helmets may be considered for children who have not had their misshapen head condition corrected during early infancy, when the condition is more easily and more effectively treated.  Head braces or helmets are not fitted on children of less than eight months of age.  The helmet is worn for about 9-12 months, 23 hours a day, and requires adjustments every six weeks or so.

Other Tips

  • Alternate sleeping positions from back to side, to the other side.
  • Do not let your baby stay in a car seat or stroller for long periods of time.
  • If you bottle feed, alternate the sides on which you hold your baby.

When should I seek help?

Of course you are concerned about your child, so be proactive and seek help.  A child does not outgrow the misshapen head condition, although it may improve slightly with time.  When a child grows hair it is less noticeable, but the problem is still there, so the sooner you seek treatment, the better.

An infant has seven soft spots in his head, and there is a lot of movement between the skull bones.  The first one starts to fuse after two months; this is the forehead, which is in two pieces in a baby.  I have seen many children come in for head shaping between the ages of nine months and 30 months when it is already too late to achieve significant change.  Some valid work can still be done at this age, but it can also be time consuming with a toddler who cannot lie still, so the treatment takes longer.  The earlier you seek treatment, the more effective it will be.

Candida https://thebodygroup.com/candida/ Sun, 29 Nov 2015 14:40:48 +0000 https://thebodygroup.com/?p=3152 We are full of good and bad bacteria, viruses, parasites and yeasts. They live in symbiosis or harmony within us but when there is an imbalance and the bad bacteria outnumber the good bacteria, the bad yeast takes over and grows out of control, wreaking havoc on our health. An overgrowth of harmful yeast in the body affects our vitality, immunity and our ability to maintain a healthy weight.

Initially the overgrowth of yeast starts in the intestines but it can spread to other areas of the body. This yeast is called candida albicans and the condition is called candidiasis (also known as thrush). The obvious signs of candidiasis are a white coating in the mouth and tongue in infants and itching, discharge and burning in the genital region for women. Men can also develop male thrush with itching, redness and soreness of the penis. It is possible that your partner could re-infect you if he or she suffers with thrush or is a carrier of it. Both partners should then be treated to prevent re-infection.

The good bacteria in our intestine become destroyed through the use of antibiotics. When antibiotics are given for any bacterial infection (and they cannot help when we have a virus like the cold) they destroy everything. Antibiotics can’t discriminate between beneficial bacteria and bad bacteria and so they wipe out both. When the beneficial bacteria is destroyed, the yeast grows out of control in the lining of the intestine and then spreads to other areas of the body. The use of steroids (including asthma and allergy medications, birth control pills and medications for arthritis) when taken for more than three months can have the same effect. Pregnancy, with the attendant hormone changes, can also cause an overgrowth of yeast.

When a yeast overgrowth occurs in the lining of the intestines, it causes the intestines to lose the ability to break down carbohydrates or sugars such as bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and grains. These undigested carbohydrates then sit in the intestine and become decaying layers of sticky matter that destroy the structure of the villi (projections of the intestine) that are essential for the absorption of nutrients from food into the blood stream that feeds all our cells. This rotting matter also becomes food for the bad bacteria so it continues to grow out of control.

Another dangerous problem arises when the intestines cannot break down food and instead of normal metabolism we now get alcoholic fermentation. The alcohol spreads to all areas of the body, including the brain, and can contribute to problems with all metabolism, muscle coordination and weakness, and also cause an inability to concentrate and focus. Medical and scientific research shows this can also contribute to conditions such as ADHD, autism, allergies, dyspraxia and dyslexia.

Allergies are caused by the long stringy strands of candida albicans taking root in the inner lining of the intestines and opening the tight junctions of the intestinal wall. Instead of remaining in the intestines and being eliminated, partially digested food then escapes into the body through these gaps, setting off alarm bells for the immune system to fight and destroy these foreign particles. It is not uncommon for someone to suddenly start to develop allergies later in life and this is one of the main culprits.

It’s hard to imagine that one unfriendly little yeast can cause so many problems, but this is a very common problem and apart from the conditions above, it can also lead to depression, muscle and joint pain, brain fog, difficulty with dealing with negative emotions, numbness and tingling in the body, low thyroid function, difficulty maintaining proper blood sugar levels and cardiovascular disease.

A quick test to know if you have candidiasis is to spit into a class of water and see if there are any stringy strands in the saliva. You can also have a blood test performed by your doctor.

The cure for this is to do an effective candida cleanse for a minimum of 21 days depending on the severity. One of the reasons I feel so strongly about doing this at least once in your lifetime is that it will prevent all the “old age” conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, heart attack and strokes, all caused by a low grade inflammation in the body that the body cannot get rid of.

Please contact The Body Group if you would like more information on improving your gut health and ridding your body of yeast overgrowth.

Now Offering Assessments via Video Chat for Flat Head Syndrome https://thebodygroup.com/now-offering-assessments-via-video-chat-for-flat-head-syndrome/ Sat, 23 Aug 2014 02:24:58 +0000 https://thebodygroup.com/?p=2172 Caroline Rhodes, physiotherapist and craniosacral therapist has 30 years experience and has been treating newborns in Hong Kong for the past 16 years. As a result of parents seeking her help for their baby in connection with flat head syndrome, she is now offering assessments through either Skype or Facetime.

The parents will need to have a smart phone with a video so that they can show the different angles of the baby’s spine, head and face. Once the areas that are contributing to the flat head are determined, Caroline can teach the parent some gentle mobilisations to correct any restrictions. She will also offer a home exercise programme. This is an essential key in getting the baby to move in all directions rather than favouring one direction, which is a major factor leading to the flat head.

A treatment in the clinic can be arranged after the assessment whenever it is convenient for the parents to come to the clinic. The Skype or Facetime session will offer significant savings in both time and money for those parents coming in from other regions in Asia.

Physiotherapy for the treatment of flat head syndrome is often covered by medical insurance.

Key Benefits of Baby Head & Face Shaping https://thebodygroup.com/key-benefits-of-baby-head-face-shaping/ Tue, 12 Aug 2014 03:00:37 +0000 https://thebodygroup.com/?p=2161 Promoting Your Baby’s Wellbeing Through Head Molding

A balanced, symmetrical facial structure isn’t just about structural beauty. While it is true that people who are photogenic normally have symmetrical facial features, there are health advantages to a symmetrical face as well. Shaping a baby’s head while the bones are malleable has many health benefits, in addition to the cosmetic ones.

People with balanced features are more photogenic, because photographs tend to exaggerate any facial asymmetries. While I wish that we were not judged by our looks alone, research shows that people who are attractive are perceived as more intelligent and successful and are given more opportunities in life.

I discovered the benefits of head shaping when I worked in the US with maxillofacial surgeons and orthodontists treating teenagers and adults to improve their bite. It was not unusual to see overcrowding of the upper teeth and a narrow palate (roof of mouth). To make room for the teeth, bars are inserted on the roof of the mouth in children to spread the palate apart. Some children have surgery to expand this bone. As I continued my training in this field I learned about how our bones are formed and what preventative measures can be taken. Often the position in utero or birth process can affect the shape of the head and face.

Frequently the over crowding of the upper teeth can be found in children who were delivered with forceps because the spoons of the forceps can compress the bones on the side of the head resulting in a compressed and narrow palate, which can create a lifetime of issues. As infants, these children may not suck well and take a long time to feed, up to 45 minutes or more. They can also be fussy on the breast.

Sometimes the forceps compresses a bone called the sphenoid, which can restrict normal rhythmic skull bone movement. The sphenoid bone movement impacts growth development, because normal sphenoid movement stimulates the pituitary gland, which triggers the release of hormones, including Growth Hormone.

Fortunately, this kind of condition can be easily treated by gentle pressure to spread the palate, and this treatment can be done at any age.

Natural delivery results in a different facial alignment, although not all natural deliveries result in a facial misalignment. One of the most common is a left facial slant: the left eye is smaller and higher, the cheekbone on the same side is depressed and the corner of the mouth droops slightly. This alignment occurs as the baby travels along the birth canal. The face drags along the mother’s sacral and coccyx (tail bone) bones and leaves an imprint on the face. Eighty percent of the time the baby travels on his left side. If a baby travels on her right side, the slant would appear on the right.

While not all natural deliveries result in a facial slant, some contributing factors are:

  • Mother has a small pelvis and the baby has a large head
  • Mother has a compressed sacrum or coccyx that deviates in or to the side. This condition is usually caused by a fall on the buttocks that was never corrected
  • First child through the birth canal

During the first 72 hours after birth, the baby’s head will return to a normal shape, the overlap of the four bones on the top of the head usually smooth out and the head loses its cone shape. Sucking and crying help contract the connective tissue in the head called the dura, and this will help to re-align the skull bones. If, after several weeks, you notice the bones are “bumpy” on the top of the head or you notice some of the characteristics of the facial slant described earlier, you may want to consider head shaping. In addition to the facial adjustment, it may help to calm a fussy baby, since babies with “bumpy” heads tend to be more unsettled.

Properly aligning the forehead, one of the seven facial bones that shape the eye, will not only help to open up the smaller eye; it will ensure the frontal sinus can drain properly.

Having eyes in the same horizontal plane is important for head and neck alignment. We have a strong reflex to have our eyes level because this is how we track moving objects. This reflex is so strong that, as we become upright, if one eye is higher or lower we will tilt our head to make them level. This will lead to neck pain and possibly a curvature of the spine (scoliosis).

When an infant is born, the forehead is in two pieces and then begins to fuse at an early age, finishing at 8 years of age. It is the first bone to fuse, so it is essential to have this treated early. Many mothers are told that it will correct itself, but it won’t. Growing hair to cover the asymmetry will minimize it, but the misalignment is still there.

If the cheekbone has been compressed during delivery, then the upper jawbone, the maxilla, will also be compressed. Misalignment of the maxilla can affect the drainage of the maxillary sinuses and can adversely affect the position of the upper and lower teeth. In addition, the maxilla determines our appearance as adults. For the most part, babies are all eyes. The lower part of the face develops over time as infants chew solid food and talk. The maxilla starts to grow as the child ages and becomes a teenager and determines how the child will look as an adult. A balanced maxilla contributes to facial symmetry as well as the position of upper teeth in relation to lower teeth.

Does your baby have a flat head and or Torticollis?

A baby with a flat head is a common reason that parents seek treatment. While it is true that hair will eventually cover the misalignment, a flat head may be the cause for other health related issues.

When an infant is born, the occipital bone at the base of the skull is in four pieces, which fuse at about 8 years of age. The spinal cord joins the brainstem through the foramen magnum, a large hole at the base of the skull, which is surrounded by the four occipital bones. If the occipital bone is compressed, the size of the foramen magnum may not reach its intended size thereby impeding the nerves that travel from the brain and spinal cord. Misalignment of the occipital bone can affect the alignment of the head and neck, leading to a lifetime of spinal problems.

If the infant’s head is flat to one side, then all the bones on that side will move forward so the ear, forehead and cheekbone are all forward. This occurs because the occiput (the bone at the back of the head) is compressed and rotated down, a common occurrence in a natural delivery.

A compressed and rotated occiput can compress and pinch the nerves—any combination of nerves that travel from the brain to the body. These nerves are called Cranial Nerves 9, 10 and 11 and control the tongue, internal organs (including the heart, lungs, stomach and all digestive organs), and the neck muscle (the sternocleidomastoid) respectively. Torticollis, or wry neck, is common and in literature thought to occur in infants because of birth trauma or intrauterine malposition, but it is not really known. Infants with torticollis will have limited neck side bending and rotation to the opposite side of the muscle. I would like to note here that torticollis in the literature often refers to a spasm of the sternocleidomastoid muscle for unknown reasons. Because I have seen at least a thousand babies with this condition and have found that decompressing the occiput will often produce excellent results, I can only surmise that this is beneficial. The traditional physiotherapy approach to stretch the muscle is not as effective and, if it is helpful, takes many sessions and is painful for the child who cries during the session.

Babies with compression of the occiput, with or without a flat head, can also have colic or non- projectile reflux, which can be caused by possible compression of Cranial Nerve 10 or the Vagus Nerve that gives the message for all the internal organs to perform their functions. This compression occurs between the opening where the occiput and temporal bone come together at the base of the skull forming the opening called the Jugular foramen. Mothers are often told to “wait it out”; however, manual therapy treatment to manipulate the bones into the correct position may solve the problem and prevent other problems from occurring later. The symptoms of colic may be “outgrown,” but if the occipital bone compression remains, symptoms may present later with a different diagnosis. For example, one study reports that adults with irritable bowel syndrome had colic as infants. With manual therapy treatment, the infant can have a gentle adjustment that will allow the bones to fuse properly—treating the cause of the problem and not just the symptoms.

Especially difficult deliveries or multiple births

Your child can benefit from treatment regardless of the type of birth you had. Difficulties can arise from the baby’s position in utero (especially if there are multiple babies in the womb), the shape of the mother’s pelvis, or an infant who has suffered fetal distress. You may consider having the baby checked if there is bruising on the head at birth, since bruising may indicate that other problems are present.

Spinal alignment

It is impossible to treat the neck and head if the pelvis and spine are out of alignment. It is common for these parts of the body to be out of alignment from the baby’s position in utero or during the delivery. The first step, therefore, is to check the alignment of the pelvis and spine before any head shaping treatments occur.

Does it hurt?

The treatment is very gentle, and newborn babies will often sleep through it. The first 24 hours following a treatment will produce a change for either the better or worse. Often the infant will have a large bowel movement and may sleep more. Occasionally the child may cry more for the first 24 hours. The baby is adjusting to a new position and the crying helps to contract the dura and align the skull bones. Even if the baby cries after the first visit, they will not normally cry after every visit.

How long does it take?

A session with Caroline is one hour and with very active children 30 minutes. A baby who suffers from colic and reflux should experience a noticeable improvement by the third visit, and there may be improvement after the first.

Head shaping can take three to ten visits, depending on the severity of the misalignment and the age of the child. The age of the child will have an effect on the success, since the forehead starts to fuse after two months of age. Once the bones start to fuse, it may not be possible to re-align the forehead and to some extent the back of the head. Treatment with infants under 2 months is therefore best, as the bones are not fused and the baby is content to breast or bottle feed or suck on the mother’s finger or a pacifier. Sucking during treatment is helpful as the cranial bones naturally move while sucking.

Working with infants six months and older is challenging, as the child often wants to roll and move about. Between the ages of 8 or 9 months to 18 months is the most challenging; after a few tries, if I’m unable to make the best use of the time because the infant is not able to lie relatively still, I suggest coming back after 18 months of age. Keep in mind that the results as they get older may not be optimal for the shaping of the head, but any restrictions of the connective tissue because of the misalignment will be released.

Insurance coverage and fees

Most medical insurance covers physiotherapy services. You may require a doctor’s note to receive reimbursement from your insurance provider. You can check with your insurance provider prior to starting treatment to determine what kind of coverage you have for physiotherapy services, and what, if any, paperwork is required. Colic and reflux are routinely covered. Misshapen head or plagiocephaly is often covered especially since it is so common these days with babies left lying on their backs to prevent SIDS.

Mothers’ feedback

I am so relieved that I decided to take my 5 week old son for craniosacral therapy at The Body Group. Caroline Rhodes and her staff treated Nicholas for the obvious symptoms he suffered as a result of a traumatic delivery which resulted in and aggressive vacuum birth. Nicholas endured serious bruising and swelling on the top of his scalp and forehead at the hairline. The doctors and nurses advised us that “babies heal quickly so don’t worry the bruising will go away.” However, what they don’t mention are the side effects which could arise from such a traumatic birth. I understand that injuries of this nature could cause complications in the lungs of the newborn and also emotional issues later in development. This is why I sought further understanding and treatment from Caroline. Aside from the basic craniosacral techniques, Caroline also performed a few sessions of head shaping which smoothed out the raised area created from the bruising and swelling which occurred. As a bonus, I even learned some techniques to calm Nicholas when he becomes distressed. Now Nicholas is almost 3 months and seems to be healthy and growing nicely. I have already recommended my friends to bring their newborns to see Caroline and would continue to encourage others to learn more about craniosacral therapy and the short and long term benefits for their babies.

Maria McCabe, Sai Kung

“In March 2004 we noticed that our five month old daughter Thea was developing a badly misshapen head – a large “flat” patch on the rear right hand side of her skull, and that her face was becoming noticeably lopsided.

I voiced my concerns to our pediatrician who simply told me to turn her head onto the other side when she was asleep and that I should not be worried, as “when her hair grows you won’t notice it”. Hardly inspiring stuff!

We spoke next to our GP, Dr Kath Reynolds, who was happy to refer us to Caroline Rhodes.

We saw Caroline for the first time at the end of April who explained in great detail the problems with Thea’s skull and also discovered that she had a rotated pelvis.

For the following three months we saw Caroline twice a week for cranio-sacral therapy designed to correct the flat spot on Thea’s skull and to even out her lopsided face. The sessions involved very gentle pressure being applied – which Thea seemed to actually enjoy! The whole experience was tremendously reassuring with a professional team who are always calm and ready to explain everything they were doing. It was great to finally find people who acknowledged that there was a problem and could demonstrate a straight forward way to fix it.

My husband had some doubts about the “new fangled” (his words!) treatment that Caroline offers and was so skeptical he even came along to check it out for himself. He asked numerous questions which Caroline was happy to answer and was so impressed that he became an immediate convert. Shortly afterwards he even went to Caroline for his own foot problems!

Six months down the line Thea has a normal rounded skull, her eyes are in line and her face looks properly proportioned. The greatest compliment we can pay Caroline and her team is the fact that no one today can believe that Thea ever had a problem with her skull.”

Sleep easy… https://thebodygroup.com/sleep-easy/ Tue, 01 Apr 2014 10:16:41 +0000 https://thebodygroup.com/?p=1918 The most important factor in promoting health and wellbeing is adequate, restful sleep (ideally 6-8 hours a night) that allows the body to enter an anabolic state (see Adrian’s article) in which it can rejuvenate. Our immune system is boosted during sleep and muscle mass and bone density are increased. Unless our bodies can rejuvenate in this way we cannot function well and our health begins to decline.

One of the main reasons for poor quality sleep or insomnia is chronic stress and trauma. These cause the brain to become hyper-aroused, which affects the balance of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). Simply put, the ANS controls all the body’s functions such as heart rate, digestion, breathing, urination, sexual arousal and swallowing. When the ANS is not in balance, all the other systems in the body suffer. If not properly dealt with, chronic stress and trauma cause the release of aging or death hormones (such as cortisol and adrenaline) while reducing the release of youth hormones (such as growth and sex hormones).

Here are a few suggestions for getting restorative sleep:

Keep to a routine. Try to go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time, preferably early. Our natural circadian rhythm encourages us to wake up when the sun rises and sleep when it sets.

See a certified EFT or Matrix Reimprinting practitioner to release stress and eliminate cellular memory of traumatic events. You can learn to use this technique on yourself before going to bed or when you wake up in the night. EFT is simply acupuncture without needles and involves tapping on points to release any stressful thoughts. Go to our website for more information on stress, and for releasing past trauma.

Sleep in complete darkness even a small amount of light (such as light from a clock radio) can disrupt your internal clock and affect the pineal gland’s production of melatonin and serotonin. If you need to get up in the night, try not to use the light. Even small amounts of light pass directly through your optic nerve to your hypothalamus which controls your biological clock. Light signals your brain that it’s time to wake up and prepare for ACTION. The most comfortable eye mask I’ve ever come across is made by Bucky.

Use ear plugs if you live in a noisy environment or you have a partner who snores. These earplugs are amazing! They are comfortable and block out just about any noise. Be warned however. You may not hear your alarm clock or the phone when you have these in! They can be ordered on Amazon.

Do not eat or drink after 8 p.m. – preferably 7 p.m. Ideally you should not eat later than three hours before going to bed in order to have truly restful sleep. If you stop eating by 7p.m. you will also find it easier to lose weight. Cutting out liquids two hours before bed will reduce the chances of waking at night to urinate.

If you really need something in the evening, have a high protein snack several hours before bed. This will help with the production of L-tryptophan, an amino acid necessary for the production of the hormone known as melatonin. The pineal gland in the brain converts melatonin into serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter known to promote sleep as well as enhance our sense of wellbeing. Above all, avoid grains and sugars before bedtime. They will raise your blood sugar levels, delaying sleep. Later in the night, when the blood sugar drops too low, you may wake up and have difficulty falling back to sleep.

The above are just a few suggestions to help you achieve better sleep. Looking at stress levels, diet, exercise and your sleep routine can all make a profound difference. In addition, at The Body Group we can also offer additional modalities such as acupuncture and cranial-sacral work.
